What Is Ngabuburit? Get to Know More about the Unique Origin

Ramadan is a special month associated with various traditions. One of the famous traditions in Indonesia is ngabuburit. This term describes an activity done in the evening before iftar.

However, what is ngabuburit? When is the right time to do it, and what kind of activity can you do during ngabuburit? To get the answers, read the complete information below!

What Is Ngabuburit?

Did you know that ngabuburit is not a foreign language derived, especially from Arabic? Interestingly, ngabuburit is a term coming from Sundanese, specifically ‘ngalantung ngadagoan burit’, which means relaxing and waiting for the evening.

Despite coming from Sundanese, the term is getting popular and is used by many people across the area. In the Ramadan context, ngabuburit refers to the activity done to wait for iftar time.

The tradition has become the habit of many Indonesian Muslims as a leisure activity, waiting for the evening by doing beneficial and fun activities.

Although it is often associated with entertainment and relaxation, ngabuburit can also be filled with positive activities, such as increasing worship, increasing insight, or carrying out social activities, for example, sharing iftar snacks with others.

That way, ngabuburit is not only spending on leisure time but also brings greater benefits to ourselves and others.

When to Do Ngabuburit?

Ngabuburit time usually starts in the evening before Maghrib adhan or around 4 pm up to 6 pm (iftar time). Yet, the duration varies following the iftar time of each area.

You can do light activity when doing ngabuburit to make your body stay fit until the iftar time. Some people choose to walk or go around the city to look for iftar snacks, while others prefer to spend time at home reciting the Quran or cooking iftar menus.

Basically, you can do ngabuburit whenever and wherever you want in the evening, as long as you are doing it reasonably and do not disrupt the main prayer, which is breaking the fast.

Beneficial Things to Do During Ngabuburit

To make your evening meaningful, there are several beneficial ngabuburit activities you can do as follows:

1. Reciting the Quran

Spending the time waiting to break the fast by reciting the Quran will bring great rewards. Reciting the Quran can also calm the heart and mind, making the time waiting for breaking the fast more meaningful.

2. Working Out

You can do light exercise, like walking, to maintain your body fit without exhausting much energy. This light physical activity helps maintain health during fasting without weakening your body.

3. Watching a Movie

One enjoyable way to kill time is to watch movies. After fasting all day, pick an entertaining movie to keep your mind off your hunger and thirst.

4. Shopping for Iftar

Supermarkets have become one of the popular places for ngabuburit. You can buy some iftar dish ingredients. You can also avoid the long queue and ensure that iftar snacks are ready on time.

5. Attending Islamic Study

Many mosques and online platforms provide Ramadan study in the evening. This can be the right moment to gain more knowledge about Islam and implement it daily.

6. Buying Iftar Snacks

Hunting for iftar snacks is one of the most popular ngabuburit activities. Towards evening, many people sell various foods to break the fast in various locations.

From kolak to fritters, buying iftar snacks can be an exciting experience while helping merchants earn a living during Ramadan.

7. Cleaning the House

Cleaning the house while waiting for the iftar time can make the ambience more comfortable for breaking the fast together with family. You can conduct simple cleaning tasks like sweeping and wiping off the dining table to avoid becoming overly exhausted.

8. Cooking

Cooking your iftar snacks can be a fun ngabuburit activity you can do. Aside from providing healthy snacks for your family, you can also cook your family’s favorite dishes.

That is the information about ngabuburit and the beneficial activity you can do in the evening. As explained above, there are many ngabuburit activities you can do.

Even while ngabuburit is frequently connected to entertainment, it can have greater significance if it is spent with productive activities, like cleaning the house, reciting the Quran, or participating in Islamic studies. Thus, during Ramadan, ngabuburit might serve as a chance to enhance benefits.

During fasting, your body might lose fluid, especially when you do heavy activity in the evening. Yet, do not let this disrupt your fast!

To maintain your body fluid while fasting, make sure to always provide the best quality mineral water for suhoor and iftar.
