Various things can break the fast, including menstruation or postpartum bleeding. But what about bleeding from a wound? Many people often question this.
In some cases, wounds on some body parts may bleed due to scratches or treatment. To clarify whether bleeding affects your fast, check out the explanation below!
Does Bleeding Break Fast?
If a person bleeds because of a condition, such as menstruation or postpartum bleeding, then her fast is invalid. What about the bleeding from other causes, like cuts, acne, nosebleeds, or accidents?
Minor bleeding from a pimple doesn't invalidate a fast. But you can break fast if you have intense bleeding during fasting, which causes dizziness and weakness.
As an exchange, you must repay the missed fast by fasting outside of Ramadan.
Does Bleeding Gums Break Fast?
It has been clarified that bleeding from a wound doesn't invalidate your fast. So, what about bleeding gums? The answer is still no.
Since bleeding gums is an unanticipated health condition, it doesn't break fast.
Through the YouTube channel Manhaj Salafuna Sholeh, Buya Yahya Zainul Ma'arif explains that the blood from the gums cannot be anticipated or held back during fasting. For this reason, your fast remains valid.
Conversely, intentional bleeding, such as from tooth extraction, can break a fast.
To avoid bleeding gums while fasting, consider the following precautions:
- Brush your teeth regularly while fasting by keeping your mouth and tongue clean after suhoor and iftar.
- Avoid consuming extremely hot or cold food meals to avoid gum inflammation.
- Consume a healthy and balanced diet, including vegetables and fruits to help maintain healthy gums and teeth.
- If the gum bleeding persists or pain or swelling occurs, consult your dentist immediately to get proper treatment.
Types of Blood That Break the Fast
Several types of blood can break the fast. Here is the explanation:
1. Blood from Cupping
Someone with a particular health condition may need a cupping treatment, but how does it affect fasting?
Cupping causes someone to bleed during fasting intentionally. Therefore, it invalidates the fast.
This ruling is based on the words of Prophet Muhammad SAW:
“A man who cups and a man who gets himself cupped break their fast,”
2. Blood Drawn from Veins
If donating blood makes someone weak, it allows them to invalidate their fast. However, blood donation itself doesn't break fast. In fact, it provides health benefits to the donor receivers.
Additionally, taking a small amount of blood as a sample for tests, for example, determining blood type, does not break the fast.
3. Blood from Injections
A person who suffers from a particular health condition may require injections. Receiving an injection causes minor bleeding, so is it allowed during fasting?
An injection is inserting a substance or drug into the body with a needle according to medical procedures.
Therefore, an injection doesn't invalidate a fast because it doesn't involve inserting substances into an open body cavity.
The process only requires inserting substances into the lymph nodes with the help of the right medical tools.
As explained by Ibn Hajar Al-Haitami in the book Minhajul Qawim, the thing that can break a person's fast is inserting something into an open body cavity.
For the record, this ruling only applies if the injection is to insert medicine for medical treatment purposes.
On the other hand, the injection aims to insert a food substitute that invalidates the fast.
Well, those are all types of bleeding that may invalidate a fast.
As explained earlier, several conditions that cause fatigue allow you to break the fast.
To prevent fatigue during fasting, you can drink enough water at suhoor, iftar, and the time between.
Apply the 2-4-2 drinking rule—two glasses at iftar, four glasses before bedtime, and two at suhoor—to stay hydrated.
