1. Prepare the Land for Planting Potatoes

Potatoes are suitable for planting in areas with cool temperatures and loose soil. So, in cultivating potatoes, it is recommended to loosen the soil first by plowing or hoeing it to a depth of approximately 30 cm.

After plowing or hoeing, the soil then needs to be dried in the sun for at least 1 week before making beds.

Beds are planting areas for plants made from soil that you have dried. For optimal results, you should try to make the beds 800 cm wide, 10 cm high, and have a distance of approximately 40 cm between beds.

This distance will serve as a water flow when it rains, so that it does not inundate the beds, because potato plants will find it difficult to grow if the soil is too wet.

2. Fertilizing the Soil

Fertilizing the soil can be done after to land has been prepared. You do not have to use chemical fertilizers.

Alternatively, you can make your organic fertilizer by processing organic waste such as household waste, leaves, and animal manure.

Once the fertilizer is ready, add it to the soil, then backfill with soil to prevent it from being eroded by rainwater, then leave it for 10–15 days.

3. Prepare the Potato Feeds

When growing potatoes, seed preparation must be considered to get quality results. You can choose healthy tubers that have been harvested at a sufficient age.

It is highly recommended to use seedlings that come from old and strong tubers with characteristics that have 30–45/50 grams, 30–35 mm diameter, and have 3–5 sprouts.

4. Planting Potato Seedlings

After preparing the land and finding high-quality seeds, you can start planting potatoes.

Planting potatoes is done by placing the seedlings 8 cm deep in the soil. This depth should be ideally considered, not too high, but not too deep either.

In addition, the potato seedlings must also be completely buried, not visible from the surface of the soil, and only the shoots of the seedlings can be seen above the ground.

5. Maintenance of Potato Plants

In addition to applying fertilizer to the soil after making the beds, you also must apply fertilizer after the potatoes are planted.

Fertilization can be started after 30 days of planting, and then can be done every 20 days to get maximum results.

In addition to applying fertilizer, you must also do weeding, which is the removal of weeds that grow around potato plants.

This aims to maximize the nutrients obtained by potato plants from the soil and sunlight is not absorbed by the surrounding wild plants.

That’s all of how to plant potatoes that you should pay attention to so that your potato plants can produce fresh and healthy potatoes for the body.
