How to Grow Hydroponic Lettuce with Used AQUA Bottles

Growing hydroponic lettuce at home can make it easier for you to prep food in the kitchen and serve it as a side dish. Lettuce is a popular vegetable in everyday dishes, whether enjoyed in salads, sandwiches, or simply as a side dish.

How to Grow Hydroponic Lettuce

Hydroponic growing methods are gaining popularity due to the limited space available. Due to its simplicity, this hydroponic lettuce growing method can be easily accomplished with used AQUA bottles at home. Check out the process below.

1. Prepare Tools and Materials

To grow hydroponic lettuce in used AQUA bottles, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • Used AQUA bottles (any size) with holes drilled in the bottom to resemble net pots.
  • Green lettuce seeds.
  • Rockwool.
  • Simple wick system (wick made of flannel and nutrient container).
  • Hydroponic nutrient solutions A and B.
  • Clean water to make the nutrient solution.
  • Tweezers.
  • Fine sprayer.
  • Kitchen knife/cutter.
  • A TDS meter to measure the concentration of the nutrient solution.

2. Sowing Seeds

In the initial stages of hydroponic lettuce cultivation, seeds are sown in rockwool to provide a well-watered, clean, and stable environment ideal for germination. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Soak the seeds in a clean, cut-off, used AQUA bottle filled with water for 12–24 hours, until sprouts appear.
  • Prepare the rockwool by slicing the top (without cutting) to 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm. Then, make holes approximately 1 cm deep using tweezers or a toothpick.
  • Place the rockwool in a wide container, such as a tray. Then, place the sprouted lettuce seeds into each hole in the rockwool.
  • Moisten the rockwool using a gentle spray of water as needed. Make sure not to over-wet it!
  • Place the tray containing the rockwool in a location that receives direct sunlight.
  • Care for the seeds by continuously monitoring their humidity. Once four leaves have emerged (usually after 10 days of sowing), immediately transfer them to the wick system.

3. Transferring to a Wick System

After 10 days, ideally, the seedlings will have developed four leaves, making them ready for transplantation. However, if some seedlings have fewer than 2 leaves, it is good not to transplant them.

This could indicate that the seed quality is not as good as the others.

Here are the steps you can take to transplant hydroponic lettuce seedlings:

  • Cut the rockwool into separate sections.
  • Place each section into a net pot made from a used AQUA bottle that has been cut to resemble a glass. Then, add a flannel wick. This wick helps the lettuce seedlings absorb nutrients.
  • Place the net pot from the used AQUA bottle into the nutrient container, ensuring the wick connects the nutrient solution to the rockwool.
  • Make a nutrient solution by mixing 2.5 ml of nutrient A, 2.5 ml of nutrient B, and 1 liter of water. Measure the concentration with a TDS meter until it reaches 500 ppm.
  • Fill the wick system tank with the prepared nutrient solution and maintain it for 12 days after planting (DAP) or transfer to the wick system.

4. Treatment

Once the seedlings have been transferred to the wick system, you will need to care for them until harvest time. Here are some tips to keep in mind when caring for plants of hydroponic lettuce:

  • Check your hydroponic lettuce regularly, at least every two days. Ensure the nutrient solution is at the correct concentration and that it is free from contaminants. If the water in the wick system becomes dirty, immediately replace it with fresh water of the same concentration.
  • After 12 DAP, increase the nutrient concentration to 1000 ppm (5 ml Nutrient A + 5 ml Nutrient B + 1 liter of water).
  • After 20 DAP, increase the nutrient concentration again to 1200 ppm (6 ml Nutrient A + 6 ml Nutrient B + 1 liter of water) until harvest time.
  • Prune off yellowing leaves from your hydroponic lettuce to prevent the disease from spreading to the rest of the plant.

5. Harvest Time

Now, after 30–40 days of planting, you can harvest your hydroponic lettuce and enjoy its freshness. When harvest time arrives, keep the following in mind:

  • Harvest your hydroponic lettuce when the leaves are bright green and have reached a length of 20–30 cm.
  • Use clean cutting tools, such as scissors or a knife, to prevent bacterial or fungal contamination on your lettuce plants.
  • There are two harvesting methods: a full harvest, which involves cutting off all parts of the plant, and a selective harvest, which consists of cutting off only the largest leaves. A complete harvest is suitable if you want to sell your hydroponic lettuce. In contrast, a selective harvest is ideal if you want to use it for personal consumption and want to harvest it repeatedly.
  • It is better to harvest your hydroponic lettuce in the morning. The water content in lettuce is relatively higher in the morning, making it fresher.
  • After harvesting, immediately wash the lettuce under clean, running water.
