How to Manage Severe Dehydration: Avoid Taking The Wrong Steps!

Some people might think dehydration symptoms are limited to just feeling thirsty. In reality, severe dehydration can show serious signs, such as rapid breathing, severe headaches, constant fatigue, and significantly drier skin.

In this condition, taking the wrong steps can be life-threatening. To prevent this, take note of and apply these methods to manage severe dehydration below!

How to Manage Dehydration

Here are several safe and effective ways to handle dehydration:

1. Increase Water Intake

The first thing you need to do is increase your consumption of plain water, which is the primary source of hydration for the body. If possible, consume a large amount immediately so that lost body fluids can be replaced quickly. However, if that feels too difficult, you can drink in small amounts but with higher frequency.

For the right choice of water, make sure you choose AQUA. Why AQUA? Because AQUA is 100% pure mountain water containing natural minerals without any added substances. Equally important, AQUA is 100% free from physical, biological, and chemical contaminants.

2. Avoid Sugary Drinks and Caffeine

Did you know that not all drinks help hydrate the body? Drinks with high sugar concentrations can actually affect the fluid balance in body cells and increase urination frequency. Consuming them in large amounts may worsen dehydration.

Besides sugary drinks, caffeine should also be avoided due to its diuretic properties and stimulant effects. Like sugary drinks, caffeine can trigger an increase in urination frequency. Consuming caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, or soda during severe dehydration is not the right move, especially if you do not accompany it with sufficient water intake.

3. Replenish Electrolyte Intake

During dehydration, the body loses not only water but also electrolytes—essential minerals that play a role in various body functions. Therefore, dehydration can also be managed by consuming fluids that contain electrolytes. The goal is to replace lost electrolytes, help the body absorb fluids more effectively, and prevent complications.

Electrolyte solutions can be bought at pharmacies or made at home by mixing sugar, salt, and water. Alternatively, you can choose coconut water, which has high water content and a natural taste without added sugar.

4. Avoid Outdoor Activities

Managing severe dehydration isn't just about fluid intake, but also your daily activities and where you do them. Activities performed outdoors, especially in hot weather, have a high potential to worsen dehydration.

So, when dehydration hits, avoid outdoor activities, whether related to work, heavy exercise that triggers excessive sweating, or similar tasks. Instead, try to rest comfortably indoors until symptoms subside or improve.

5. Treat Underlying Illnesses

Some cases of dehydration occur due to specific physical disorders, such as diarrhea. If you experience this, taking appropriate anti-diarrheal medication can help reduce the amount of fluid being expelled from the body.

Dehydration can also happen due to a high fever. In fact, dehydration during prolonged fever can cause seizures and kidney disorders. This condition can be managed by drinking water, sugar-free fruit juices, or eating broth-based dishes.

6. Seek Medical Help

If you experience severe dehydration symptoms like nearly fainting, very dark urine color, a rapid heart rate, or non-stop vomiting, do not hesitate to seek medical help immediately! At a healthcare facility, severe dehydration will be treated intensively, often through intravenous (IV) fluids.

This method is generally used if oral intake is no longer possible. Administering fluids via IV is considered a faster way to replace fluids and electrolytes.

The Dangers of Severe Dehydration

If not handled properly, severe dehydration can lead to several dangers:

  • Heat Injury: Can be experienced by someone lacking fluids while performing strenuous exercise. Symptoms can range from fatigue and cramps to life-threatening heatstroke.
  • Seizures: If the body is dehydrated and lacks electrolytes, the electrical signaling between cells can be disrupted. This can result in involuntary muscle contractions or seizures, and even loss of consciousness.
  • Low Blood Volume: This condition can subsequently trigger a drop in blood pressure and oxygen levels.
  • Heart Attack: Related to the previous point, if blood volume decreases, the blood becomes thicker. As a result, the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body. This increased workload may increase the risk of a heart attack.
  • Kidney Problems: Long-term or recurring severe dehydration that is left untreated can trigger urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and even kidney failure.

Those are a few ways to manage severe dehydration that you can use as a guide. As mentioned before, one of the main ways to overcome dehydration is by increasing water intake. So, don't forget to always keep AQUA Galon at home!
