These five crafts need only a clean bottle and basic tools, and each gives the bottle a second job before recycling. They run from easiest to hardest, so younger children start at the top.
Use only bottles that held drinking water or soft drinks, never containers from cleaners or pesticides. Prep is the same for every craft: wash the bottle, peel off the label and let it dry fully, then lightly sand any surface you plan to paint.
Gather scissors, glue, acrylic paint, sandpaper and a craft knife that only adults handle. Bottles of 600 ml to 1.5 L give small hands enough surface to decorate. Keep a box for offcuts as you work; the last section explains where they go.

How Do You Make Plastic Bottle Crafts Safely with Kids?
Kids can join every project safely when the tasks are split: children decorate and assemble, while adults handle the craft knife and the hot glue gun. Match the project to your child's school grade.
Younger children stick and color; from about grade 3 they can paint and use round-tip scissors on paper, with an adult still on glue-gun duty.
Skip tutorials that use a candle or lighter. In August 2026, Antara reported that burning plastic produces smoke with harmful pollutants, citing the Ministry of Health's note that burning waste can release toxic chemicals. The World Health Organization links open waste burning to coughing, skin irritation and respiratory diseases (WHO, 2025).

How Can You Make 17 August Decorations from Plastic Bottles?
Red-and-white Independence Day decorations use the same cut-and-paint steps as the everyday crafts, so a child who painted a vase can help. A lantern and mini bunting make easy group projects for classmates or neighbors in the weeks before 17 August.
- Red-and-white lantern. An adult cuts openings in a large clear bottle. Paint the plastic between them in red and white, slide in a battery LED string and add a cord. Never use a candle, which can melt or ignite the plastic.
- Mini bunting. Cut the bottle body into a flat sheet, cut out flags or stars, paint them and thread them onto raffia string.
Both pack flat, so you can store them in a box and hang them again next August.
Why Reuse Plastic Bottles Instead of Throwing Them Away?
Every bottle you reuse is one less item in an overloaded waste system. In June 2025, KLH/BPLH, Indonesia's Ministry of Environment, reported 56.63 million metric tons of national waste in 2023. About 10.8 million metric tons, almost 20%, was plastic, and the national recycling rate stood at only 22%.
By the end of 2025, only 25% of national waste was properly managed, leaving about 105,483 metric tons a day not adequately handled (KLH/BPLH, 2026).
Crafting is reuse, not recycling: the bottle gets a second job, but the plastic still becomes waste one day. KLH/BPLH (2026) calls reduction at the source, through 3R and the circular economy, the key. So refill a reusable bottle, craft with the bottles you already have and recycle the rest.

How to Recycle Plastic Bottles at Home After Crafting
Rinse and dry used bottles, then keep them with the craft offcuts in an inorganic bin until you can hand them to a waste bank (bank sampah) or collector. Check the number inside the triangle first, because it names the type of plastic.
According to Indonesia's public broadcaster RRI in 2026, drinking-water and soft-drink bottles usually carry code 1, PET (polyethylene terephthalate), a plastic designed for single use and widely recycled. Caps are often code 5, PP.
The US EPA notes that the triangle identifies the plastic type but does not necessarily mean your community collects it (EPA, 2026). So ask your nearest waste bank which plastics it accepts before you sort. Bags and wrappers can become plastic waste crafts too.
