8 Traditional Eid Dishes Made from Rice, Other than Ketupat!

Ketupat is one of the most popular rice-based dishes for Eid, commonly served as a main course.

Without this dish, Eid al-Fitr celebrations would feel incomplete. Ketupat is usually served alongside other Eid dishes, such as chicken opor or gulai.

However, did you know that there are many other rice-based dishes commonly served during Eid? What are they? Find out below.

Various Traditional Eid Dishes Made from Rice

Eid is not only about togetherness, but also about the traditional dishes everyone looks forward to.

Delicious Eid specialties make every Eid celebration even more special from year to year. Indonesia is rich in a wide variety of festive dishes.

One of the main ingredients in many Eid dishes is rice. That’s right, the celebration would not feel complete without it.

The following are some rice-based Eid dishes that are a must-have during Eid al-Fitr.

1. Lontong

Who isn’t familiar with lontong? This dish is commonly found across Java.

This rice-based Eid dish is often served as a complement to dishes like soto, bakso, sate, or opor. Its soft texture makes lontong easy to digest.

Lontong is typically wrapped in banana leaves, which makes it more flavorful. It is made by boiling or steaming it for several hours.

The cooking process usually takes 2–5 hours, depending on the desired texture. The longer the lontong is cooked, the softer the texture becomes.

2. Buras

Another rice-based Eid dish is buras. This Buginese specialty has spread to many regions across Indonesia.

Buras has a savory taste from the combination of rice and coconut milk, making it delicious to enjoy on its own.

Additionally, buras can also be used as a substitute for rice, and is typically paired with chicken opor or peanut sauce.

3. Lemang

Lemang is one of the traditional Eid dishes made from white glutinous rice. It has a savory taste from coconut milk.

The cooking method also differs from that of other rice-based Eid dishes.

Lemang is wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in bamboo, and then roasted over a fire. Enjoy it while it is warm to get a richer flavor.

Aside from being an Eid dish, lemang is used in some regions for various purposes. For instance, the Dayak people use it for traditional ceremonies.

Malay and Ulun Lampung people use it specifically for Eid. There are also several ways to enjoy lemang.

If you prefer a sweet taste, you can enjoy it with sugar-apple, jam, or kinca. Lemang can also be served as a side dish alongside rendang or fruits.

4. Wajik

Wajik is an Eid dish made from glutinous rice with a sweet flavor. As the name implies, it is shaped like a “wajik” or rhombus.

The sweet taste of wajik comes from brown sugar and coconut milk.

Aside from Eid, wajik is often served at traditional Javanese weddings.

Some people make wajik with additional flavors, such as vanilla, durian, and pandan.

The rich and sweet flavor makes it a favorite among many people. Have you tried it?

5. Lepet

Lepet is another example of a rice-based Eid dish made from white glutinous rice. This dish is widely found in Java, for cultural purposes or Eid celebrations.

Lepet is made from a mixture of glutinous rice, grated coconut, and salt, then wrapped in young coconut leaves (janur) and steamed again until cooked.

Some people may also add various types of beans to enhance the flavor.

6. Tape Ketan

Tape ketan is one of the rice-based Eid dishes. It is typically made from white or black glutinous rice, and can sometimes also be prepared using brown rice.

Making tape ketan takes quite a long time as it involves fermentation. Glutinous rice is first steamed, then mixed with yeast.

Tape ketan is typically fermented for two to four days, resulting in a sweet and slightly sour taste.

Therefore, tape ketan is best enjoyed in moderation, especially after consuming other main dishes

7. Lemper

Lemper is another rice-based Eid dish that has become a Javanese specialty and is usually made with glutinous rice.

Lemper is typically filled with shredded chicken or meat floss to add a savory flavor.

Like other Eid dishes, lemper is also wrapped in banana leaves.

However, lemper is only wrapped in banana leaves after the rice is fully cooked. It is commonly served as a light snack before the main meal.

8. Ketupat

One of the Eid specialties is ketupat. Who isn’t familiar with ketupat? It is the most iconic dish during Eid.

The majority of people often serve ketupat to their families or guests.

Ketupat is made from rice, placed into woven young coconut leaves, then boiled until cooked.

Ketupat is commonly paired with chicken opor. Many people prefer to make it by themselves rather than buy it.

This is because homemade ketupat tastes better and creates a more authentic Eid atmosphere.

Those are some Eid dishes made from rice commonly served, from lontong to ketupat. What about you? What dishes are a must-have for your Eid celebration?
