Futsal is a group physical activity that remains one of the most popular sports in Indonesia. Unlike soccer, which requires 11 players, futsal involves only 5 players; one of them plays the pivot. But did you know the pivot's role in futsal?
Every position in futsal has a different role that supports the others. To understand the responsibilities of the pivot in futsal and other positions, read the article below to the end.
What Is the Pivot Position in Futsal Games?
The pivot position in futsal games is the striker position. Like soccer, the pivot's main responsibilities in futsal are to open space, score goals, and create scoring opportunities for teammates.
Pivot players are typically tall, which helps them counter the opposing team’s defense. This is because the pivot is the offense's essential spearhead. The pivot role is also central, as it requires strong instincts to shoot the ball into the opponent’s goal.
Additionally, the pivot can also act as a game controller, similar to an anchor. The pivot is the first player who should block the opponent’s attacks before they enter the team’s defensive zone.
Specifically, several criteria are required to play the pivot position in futsal games:
- Has strong physical condition to break through the opponent’s defense.
- Has a fighting spirit, considering this position is the front-liner.
- Can control the ball well and make quick decisions.
- When receiving a pass, they have the opportunity to score goals.
- Able to execute finishing shots effectively.
Roles of Other Players in Futsal Games
In general, futsal has 4 positions. Besides pivot, futsal requires goalkeeper, anchor, and flank positions. Each position has different, interconnected roles. Here is the explanation:
1. Goalkeeper
The term “goalkeeper” is well known, even to many people. As in soccer, a futsal goalkeeper guards the goal.
To support this role, the goalkeeper is the only player who can handle the ball without committing a foul. However, it does not mean that a goalkeeper cannot score goals. The goalkeeper can also move up and score goals for their team in certain situations.
2. Anchor
Another position in futsal is anchor. This position has dual roles: coordinating the attack while also playing defense. In soccer, anchors are both defenders and midfielders.
Anchor players should master ball control skills, since this position often initiates attacks. When the opponent attacks, the anchor is the first line of defense. That is why the anchor must have the most outstanding skills.

3. Flank
In soccer, the flank is known as the wings. Futsal has 2 flank players: one on the left side of the court and the other on the right. This position is responsible not only for attacking but also for linking the anchor and pivot.
A flank player should have perfect ball control and high speed. The flank also has the responsibility of scoring goals for their team; they may also score goals themselves.
The pivot and the other three positions are crucial in futsal games. However, in real matches, each player must always be ready to receive the ball and turn it into a scoring opportunity to win the game.
That concludes the explanation of the pivot's role in futsal. Understanding the strategy and roles of each position helps the game run smoothly and makes it easier to secure a victory.
