How Many Players Are on a Futsal Team? Number & Positions

Futsal is one of the most popular sports among many people, especially students and young adults. Its fast-paced gameplay requires every player to stay active, move continuously, work together, and think tactically throughout the match.

It’s no surprise that many schools and communities regularly hold futsal matches and practice sessions together.

Although it is quite popular in Indonesia, many people still do not actually know how many players are on a futsal team or how the player positions are arranged on the court. To better understand the game, check out more information in this article.

What Is Futsal?

Futsal is a team sport that at first glance resembles soccer, but it is played on a smaller field with fewer players. The term futsal comes from the Spanish term “fútbol sala,” which means indoor football.

This game began developing in South America, especially in Uruguay and Brazil, around the 1930s as an adaptation of soccer that could be played indoors.

Because it is more practical and can be played in limited spaces, futsal has become increasingly popular in many countries, including Indonesia.

One of the key characteristics of futsal is the use of a ball with less bounce than a regular soccer ball. This feature makes the game rely more on ball control, short passes, and fast teamwork between players.

Combined with the relatively small court size, futsal requires players to move quickly and make accurate decisions in both attacking and defensive situations.

How Many Players Are on a Futsal Team?

For those who are still curious or may not yet know, a futsal match is played by two teams, each consisting of five players, including one goalkeeper. This number follows the official rules set by FIFA for futsal matches.

In addition to the starting players, each team is also allowed to have up to nine substitutes, meaning the total squad size can reach 14 players.

The smaller number of players compared to soccer makes each player more actively involved in the game. This is also influenced by the smaller size of the futsal court.

With a limited playing area, futsal matches are faster and more dynamic, requiring strong teamwork and efficient movement throughout the game.

Positions and Role of Players in Futsal

In futsal, each player has different duties and responsibilities. Building a solid futsal team requires every player to be able to work together and understand their role well. Here are the futsal positions and their roles:

1. Goalkeeper

The goalkeeper is the player responsible for protecting the goal from being conceded. This position requires quick reflexes, high focus, and the ability to read the opponent’s attacks.

In addition to making saves, the futsal goalkeeper also plays an important role in building attacks from the back.

The goalkeeper must be able to deliver accurate passes, both short and long, to help maintain the team’s flow of play. In certain situations, the goalkeeper can even move forward to support the attack as an additional offensive option.

2. Anchor

The anchor is the main defensive player who maintains balance in the game from the back line. Their job is not only to stop the opponent’s attacks but also to help organize ball distribution when the team starts building an attack.

This position requires the ability to read the game, make interceptions, and maintain the rhythm of play so the team stays solid in both defense and attack.

3. Flank (Winger)

The flank, or winger, is a player who moves along the right and left sides of the court. This position requires speed, agility, and strong dribbling skills because players often face opponents in tight spaces.

Besides helping create goal-scoring opportunities, flanks must also actively drop back to help defend when the team loses possession. Their high mobility makes this position very important in game transitions.

4. Pivot (Forward Player)

The pivot acts as the main attacker and the team’s central offensive focal point. This player is responsible for receiving passes, holding up the ball, creating space, and generating goal-scoring opportunities.

A pivot needs strong ball control, the ability to shield the ball under pressure, and quick, accurate finishing in front of the goal. In some futsal tactical systems, the pivot is also the main target in the team’s attacking plays.

Differences Between Futsal and Soccer

At first glance, futsal and soccer may look similar because both are played with a ball and rely on teamwork. However, the two sports have several key differences, from the size of the playing area to the rules of the game.

Here are the main differences you should know:

1. Playing Area

One of the most noticeable differences is the size of the playing area. A futsal court is much smaller, typically measuring about 38–42 meters in length.

In contrast, a soccer field is significantly larger, with a length ranging from 90–120 meters. The larger playing area makes soccer more open and spread out, while futsal is played in a much tighter space.

2. Number of Players

Another key difference is the number of players on the court. As mentioned earlier, a futsal match is played by two teams, with five starting players on each team. In contrast, a soccer team fields 11 players.

3. Match Duration

A futsal match consists of two 20-minute halves of stopped-clock time. This means the clock stops whenever the ball goes out of play or certain fouls occur.

Soccer, on the other hand, is played in two 45-minute halves, with the clock running continuously throughout the match except for limited stoppages, which are compensated for with added time.

4. Substitution System

In futsal, teams are allowed to make unlimited substitutions during the match. This system helps maintain the game's high tempo by allowing players to stay fresh.

In soccer, however, the number of substitutions is limited according to the competition's rules.

That's an overview of how many players are on a futsal team, the positions and roles of each player, and the differences between futsal and soccer.
