History of Basketball and Its Development in Indonesia

The game of basketball is known to be exciting and fun, played by various groups ranging from teenagers to adults.

From its initial appearance to becoming as widely recognized as it is today, basketball has undergone many fascinating developments.

This journey shows how the sport continues to grow and gain popularity in various places, including Indonesia.

In fact, its popularity in some countries, such as the United States, is extremely high and it is frequently regarded as a cool sport that captures a lot of attention.

Not only that, but there are also various benefits of playing basketball that make this sport increasingly popular.

To understand why basketball is so popular and highly demanded, check out the complete historical information below!

History of Basketball in the World

The game of basketball was first created by James Naismith in 1891 while teaching at the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in Massachusetts, United States.

The idea came about because he wanted to create a sport that could be played indoors during the winter season. Initially, the game used a soccer ball and peach fruit baskets hung on the balcony railing as scoring targets.

In the beginning, each team consisted of nine players. The dribbling technique had not yet been implemented, so the ball could only be moved by throwing it to a teammate. Although simple, the game demanded agility, speed, and accuracy.

Over time, basketball continued to evolve in terms of its rules, techniques, and the number of players. In 1895, the first intercollegiate match was held, and basketball grew increasingly popular across various communities. Eventually, the sport officially became an Olympic sport in 1936 in Berlin.

Professional competitions also began to emerge following the establishment of the BAA, the predecessor of the NBA, in 1946. Today, the NBA is widely regarded as the most prestigious league in the world.

Furthermore, the first world championship organized by FIBA in 1950 successfully expanded basketball's global popularity, with Argentina emerging as the champion.

Since then, countries like the United States, Yugoslavia, and the Soviet Union have also recorded major achievements in the history of international basketball.

History and Development of Basketball in Indonesia

The history of basketball in Indonesia began in the 1920s when Chinese immigrants brought the sport to the archipelago.

They established schools in various major cities, such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Medan, where basketball was introduced as a compulsory sport.

From this point on, basketball became widely recognized and developed through local communities and clubs founded by these immigrants.

Its development grew even faster after it was included in the first National Sports Week (PON I) in 1948. Subsequently, the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) was founded in 1951 as the governing body responsible for competitions and player development.

Indonesia also joined FIBA in 1953, opening the path to the international stage. Today, basketball continues to thrive through leagues like the IBL and remains highly popular among people of all ages.

Rules in the Basketball

After understanding its history and development, it is equally important to comprehend the basic rules of basketball. The following rules serve as guidelines to ensure the game runs orderly and fairly for each team.

1. Players

Within a basketball team, there are five core players on the court and several substitutes. These five players occupy different positions: center, power forward, small forward, shooting guard, and point guard. Substitutions can be made when the ball is dead, and there is no limit on the number of substitutions.

2. Ball-Handling Time Restrictions

In a game, there are several time limits that must be observed. A player cannot remain for more than three seconds in the opponent's restricted key area.

Additionally, a team only has eight seconds to bring the ball out of its own defensive half. When attacking, the team has 24 seconds to attempt a field goal.

3. Other Regulations

The ball may be thrown in various ways, but it must not be struck or hit with a fist. Players are also not allowed to walk or run while holding the ball without dribbling or passing it. Each player has a personal foul limit, and if they exceed it, they can be disqualified.

Furthermore, players are not allowed to commit a double dribble, which occurs when a player stops dribbling and then starts dribbling the ball again.

That is the history of basketball, from its early beginnings in the world to its rapid growth and booming popularity in Indonesia.

The fast and dynamic intensity of the game makes this sport not only exciting but also highly energy-consuming. Therefore, keeping your body in prime condition is vital during the match.
