What Is Artistic Gymnastics? Its Types and History

Artistic gymnastics is one of the most popular types of gymnastics in the world. This is because it combines strength, balance, agility, and aesthetics, making it both visually appealing and physically challenging.

In this article, you will discover the definition, history, and types of artistic gymnastics. It is important to note that artistic gymnastics is not only about beautiful acrobatic movements, but also about the hard work of the athletes. To learn more about artistic gymnastics, explore the full explanation below.

What Is Artistic Gymnastics?

Artistic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics that combines acrobatic and artistic movements to create complex and beautiful performances.

This gymnastics is often featured at the Olympic Games and remains one of the most popular sports worldwide. In competition, artistic gymnastics is divided into two categories based on the apparatus used: men's artistic gymnastics and women's artistic gymnastics.

History of Artistic Gymnastics

Artistic gymnastics first appeared in the first Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece in 1896. According to the Olympics, the modern development of artistic gymnastics began in the 1800s,  pioneered by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn from Germany.

He developed the fundamental movements of artistic gymnastics in Europe and established many of the sport's early principles and training methods. Since then, artistic gymnastics has continued to grow across Europe.

Meanwhile, the development of artistic gymnastics in Indonesia began in 1963 during the Games of the New Emerging Forces 1 (GANEFO) held in Jakarta. Later, this artistic gymnastics became one of the sports contested, leading to the establishment of PERSANI (the national gymnastics federation of Indonesia).

PERSANI was responsible for leading and training athletes for GANEFO I. In 1967, TJ Purba, a gymnast, was sent to East Germany to attend a specialized artistic gymnastics coaching program for 26 months to help advance the development of the sport in Indonesia.

Types of Men’s Artistic Gymnastics

As previously stated, artistic gymnastics is divided into two types, men’s and women’s events. The following are men’s artistic gymnastics events:

1. Floor Exercise

Floor exercise is the first event of men’s artistic gymnastics. This is because it provides gymnasts with an opportunity to warm up. Movements in floor exercise require adequate muscle strength while remaining manageable for athletes.

2. Vault

The next event in men's artistic gymnastics is the vault. This is one of the simplest disciplines among the apparatus events. The vaulting table resembles the back of a horse covered in leather without a saddle. Gymnasts sprint toward the apparatus, push off a springboard, and vault over it.

3. Horizontal Bars

The horizontal bar is one of the events in men's artistic gymnastics. It consists of a steel apparatus made from a thick metal bar with a diameter of about 2.4 cm and a length of 2.5 meters. The bar is installed horizontally at a height of about 2.5 meters above the ground.

The horizontal bar is used only in men's artistic gymnastics. Performances are evaluated according to the difficulty and artistic quality of the gymnast's routine.

4. Parallel Bars

The next event in men's artistic gymnastics is the parallel bars. This apparatus consists of two horizontal bars positioned parallel to each other. Gymnasts perform acrobatic movements that require strength, agility, and balance, such as swings, circles, handstands, and release moves.

5. Pommel Horse

The pommel horse is one of the six apparatus used in men's artistic gymnastics. This apparatus resembles a horse and features two wooden handles positioned on top. Gymnasts perform various acrobatic movements on the pommel horse, including circles, rotational moves, and swings.

6. Still Rings

The final event in men’s artistic gymnastics is the still rings. This apparatus consists of two steel rings installed horizontally and positioned parallel to each other, measuring approximately 13 cm in diameter and spaced 50 cm apart. The rings are hung about 2.55 meters above the mattress.

Gymnasts use the still rings to perform a variety of acrobatic movements, such as swings, circles, and saltos. These movements require strength, agility, flexibility, balance, and excellent coordination.

Types of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics

On the other hand, the women’s artistic gymnastics events include the following:

1. Floor Exercise

Floor exercise is one of the events in artistic gymnastics. In this discipline, women gymnasts will perform a series of acrobatic and artistic movements on the 12 x 13 meters mat within a time limit of 1 minute and 30 seconds.

2. Uneven Bars

The uneven bars are the only artistic gymnastics apparatus unique to the women's category. This apparatus is similar to the men's horizontal bar, although it consists of two bars set at different heights.

3. Vault

The next event in women's artistic gymnastics is the vault. Similar to the men's category, the run-up may not exceed 25 meters.

4. Balance Beam

This type of event in women’s artistic gymnastics is the balance beam. The apparatus features a variety of movements, such as turns, bends, balance, rhythmic jump sequences, and training while sitting and lying face down.

That concludes the information about artistic gymnastics, including its definition, history, and events. It is important to note that artistic gymnastics is a sport that trains athletes' strength, agility, and speed. Therefore, it offers various benefits, such as improving flexibility, enhancing body posture, and strengthening muscles.
