How to Play Badminton: 11 Basic Techniques You Should Know

Badminton is one of the most popular small-ball sports, especially in Indonesia. Beginners will benefit from knowing how to play badminton before engaging in a playful tournament.

Mastering the basic techniques of badminton can help you play the match easier. So, without further ado, let's look at the basic badminton techniques for beginners in the following explanation!

What Are the Basic Badminton Techniques?

Learning basic badminton techniques may help beginners play in the match well and avoid unwanted risks.

What are the basic techniques of badminton? Check out below.

1. Racket Holding Technique (Grip)

The first basic badminton technique is how to hold the racket. This technique helps you hold the racket correctly.

This is because improper handling can increase the risk of injury during the match. To hold the racket, there are several techniques that you can do, namely:

  • American grip: Position the index finger and thumb until they touch each other. This technique can be used when you smash.
  • Backhand grip: Position the thumb behind the racket shaft. Then, press as if the thumb supports the racket.
  • Forehand grip: Hold the racket using the index, middle, ring, and little fingers as the main support.
  • Combination grip: Hold the racket as usual. Then, position the index finger towards the end of the racket.

2. Serve

The next basic technique that you should master is serving the ball. It consists of two types, namely the upper and lower serves.

The top serve is a way of hitting the shuttlecock with the racket above the shoulders or head.

Meanwhile, the lower serve is a way of hitting the shuttlecock with a racket below the shoulder or chest.

The top serve usually causes the shuttlecock to move horizontally. Conversely, the lower serve causes the shuttlecock to move upward or soar.

3. Footwork

Footwork helps you play badminton more agilely and optimally. To perform good footwork when playing badminton, you can follow these tips:

  • Remember your starting point.
  • If you want to go backward or forward, only take 2-3 steps.
  • If necessary, move your body to the right or left with just 1 step.

4. Body Position (Stance)

The correct body position will determine how to play badminton correctly. When you have the proper stance, playing badminton will become easier and more skillful.

In badminton, there are 3 types of positions, namely:

  • Attack position. To do this, move your body to the attack area. Then, spread your legs and raise both arms to serve.
  • Defensive position. The defensive position starts with directing the body to face the net. Then, position the racket in front of the abdomen.
  • Fighting position. Move to this position when the opponent intends to net; stand close to the net. Then, position the racket in front of the body and move your body to make a forward jump.

5. Smash

Have you ever seen a badminton player hitting the shuttlecock with force? If so, it is called a smash shot.

The smash technique is one of the basic badminton techniques that aims to target the shuttlecock to the target area with a powerful blow.

To do so, there are three types of smash techniques that you can choose from, namely:

  • Forehand smash: A powerful shuttlecock shot with the racket positioned above the head.
  • Backhand smash: Hitting the shuttlecock with force using the backhand grip technique.
  • Jumping smash: Similar to a forehand smash but done while jumping.

6. Lob Shot

The lob shot aims to lift or throw the shuttlecock towards the opponent. It forms a trajectory resembling the letter “U” upside down. As a result, it drives the opponent backward to get the shuttlecock.

7. Netting

Though considered basic, netting is a technique that requires accuracy, speed, and intuition. To do this, the player must move near the net and bounce the shuttlecock over the net precisely.

The shuttlecock will then fall in the area near the opponent's net. If the opponent is caught off guard, he will lose the point.

8. Overhead

In essence, this technique is similar to an overhead smash. However, the difference lies in the power required to do this move.

For an overhead shot, you need to hit the shuttlecock lightly, so there is no need to let out a powerful force.

9. Drop Shot

A drop shot aims to drive the opponent to the front area. To perform a drop shot, hit the shuttlecock to the center or front area of the opponent.

10. Drive

Generally, this technique is performed by doubles, whether men, women, or mixed. It's done by hitting the shuttlecock flat and fast to keep the opponent cornered while maintaining a defensive position.

11. Stroke

The last basic badminton technique that you certainly can't miss is strokes. It aims to outperform your opponent during a match.

There are four techniques of strokes, namely:

  • Overhead forehand stroke.
  • Overhead backhand stroke.
  • Underarm forehand stroke.
