History & Origin of AQUA’s 100% Indonesian Native Products
AQUA is a bottled drinking water brand founded in Indonesia. The founder of AQUA was the late Tirto Utomo, an Indonesian entrepreneur.
Initially, Tirto Utomo aimed to provide quality drinking water for Indonesians. Inspired by bottled drinking water products he observed overseas, he founded PT Golden Mississippi in 1973.
In the same year, Tirto Utomo also established the first factory in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, West Java to produce packaged drinking water in Indonesia.
PT Golden Mississippi then launched its first bottled drinking water product under the AQUA brand in 1974, packaged in 950 ml glass bottles.
Later, PT Golden Mississippi established its second factory in Pandaan, East Java. The expansion was intended to better serve consumers in eastern Indonesia.

In 1995, AQUA Group became the first bottled mineral water company in Indonesia to implement an in-line production system at its Mekarsari factory. This system ensures that the entire production process operates continuously from source to packaging, helping maintain product quality and hygiene.
It is important to understand that AQUA water is sourced from 19 protected mountain springs in Indonesia, drawing water from deep aquifers located approximately 60–140 meters below the surface, rather than from shallow groundwater or surface water sources such as wells.
AQUA's water comes from deep aquifers protected by natural rock layers with impermeable properties. These geological formations help shield the water from contamination by microbes, pesticides, and other pollutants.
AQUA selects its water sources through a rigorous process based on 9 scientific criteria, 5 evaluation stages, and at least one year of research. Experts involved come from various disciplines, including geology, hydrogeology, geophysics, and microbiology.
AQUA’s Commitment towards Sustainability and Society
AQUA is also committed to giving back more than it takes by collecting and managing plastic waste, protecting surrounding water ecosystems, and developing more water absorption areas to help address environmental challenges in Indonesia.
One of AQUA's initiatives is its watershed-based water source conservation program in its operational areas. The program has received certification from Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
