8 Types of Insomnia in Children and Adults

Insomnia is a condition in which an individual does not have adequate sleep time or finds it difficult to sleep. The types of insomnia also vary widely, depending on the cause of the condition itself, whether due to certain medical conditions or other factors.

This is important for you to understand, considering that sleep disorders such as insomnia can affect daily activities and even have a negative impact on your health.

The causes of insomnia are divided into two types, namely acute and chronic insomnia. Acute insomnia is common and is caused by short-term stress. Meanwhile, chronic insomnia occurs over a long period, generally for weeks.

Therefore, let’s get to know the different types of insomnia along with their various causes below!

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a condition in which you lack sleep or experience poor sleep quality, even though you actually have the opportunity to sleep well and sufficiently. As a result, you feel unrefreshed the next day.

Insomnia usually causes you to have difficulty falling asleep even when your body feels very tired. Not only that, insomnia can also make you wake up earlier than usual or even in the middle of the night and be unable to go back to sleep.

In essence, insomnia is not a disease, but rather a manifestation of a physical disorder such as excessive fatigue due to frequent lack of sleep or emotional imbalance.

Types of Insomnia Based on Causes

You need to know that the types of insomnia are very diverse. This disorder not only makes an individual have difficulty sleeping, but can also be caused by various factors. The two types of insomnia are as follows:

1. Secondary Insomnia

When classified, insomnia is divided into two types: secondary (comorbid) and primary (idiopathic). Secondary insomnia means it is related to health problems or psychiatric disorders, such as depression or anxiety.

2. Primary Insomnia

Meanwhile, primary insomnia usually has no underlying disease or clear cause and is not associated with any particular medical condition. Cases of this type are relatively rare.

Types of Onset Insomnia

Onset insomnia is a condition in which you have difficulty falling asleep or feel unable to sleep even after lying in bed and closing your eyes for 20 to 30 minutes.

As a result, you remain awake throughout the night and feel very tired the next day. This condition can occur in both the short and long term.

Onset insomnia is also divided into two types, namely acute and chronic. Here is the explanation.

1. Acute Insomnia

Acute insomnia is the most common type. This condition is usually caused by stress and lasts for a short period, ranging from a few days to several weeks.

For example, when you experience an unpleasant event and feel stressed, it can trigger acute insomnia. This may happen when adapting to a new environment or even losing someone you deeply love.

2. Chronic Insomnia

Another type is chronic insomnia, which occurs when you have difficulty sleeping for a long period, such as weeks or even months.

The causes of chronic insomnia vary widely, including stress, nightmares, brain or nerve disorders, irregular sleep patterns, medication use, or mental health issues.

3. Paradoxical Insomnia

Paradoxical insomnia is a condition in which an individual feels they have not slept at all, even though their body has actually been resting. The main characteristic is the perception of not sleeping despite having slept.

Types of Insomnia Based on Onset of Complaints

Meanwhile, based on the onset of complaints, insomnia is classified into three types:

1. Early Insomnia

Early insomnia is a condition in which you have difficulty initiating sleep even though you already feel tired and sleepy.

2. Middle Insomnia

Middle insomnia is a condition in which you have difficulty maintaining sleep or wake up in the middle of the night.

3. Late Insomnia

Late insomnia is a condition that causes you to wake up too early and then be unable to fall back asleep. Like other types of insomnia, this condition can also be caused by medical or psychological factors such as stress and anxiety.

Types of Insomnia in Children

Insomnia in children, also known as Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood (BIC), is a sleep disorder that affects children. This condition is divided into three types: BIC sleep onset, BIC limit-setting, and mixed BIC.

BIC sleep-onset usually occurs due to poor sleep habits, such as falling asleep while watching television, being fed, or being rocked.

BIC limit-setting generally occurs when children refuse or delay going to sleep, for example by asking for a drink, going to the bathroom, or making other excuses.

Meanwhile, mixed BIC is a combination of both types, where the child has poor sleep habits while also resisting bedtime.

Those are the types of insomnia you need to know. If you experience any of these types over a long period, try consulting a doctor to receive further care.

This is because poor-quality sleep is not good for your health. If you experience it occasionally or in the short term, you can start preventing it by adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as exercising regularly and consuming nutritious foods.

Furthermore, make sure your daily fluid intake is always fulfilled. You are advised to drink at least 2 liters or about 8 glasses of water per day to meet your body’s fluid needs.

This is important because research shows that insufficient fluid intake can increase stress and even trigger depression. In fact, drinking water before bed can help you sleep more soundly.
