Cricket: History, Rules, Benefits, and How to Play

Cricket is a team sport played with a small ball that originated in England and has since spread to many countries, such as Australia, India, and Pakistan.

Although not really popular in Indonesia, this type of small-ball sport involves two teams competing with each other to score the highest points with strict rules and techniques.

Cricket may look similar to baseball, rounders, or softball. However, it has key differences, ranging from the shape and size of the field, the number of players, to the equipment used.

Then, what are the history, rules, benefits, and basic techniques of cricket? Discover the complete explanation in the following article!

What Is Cricket?

Cricket is a sport that is widely known around the world and has even become England's national summer sport.

This game uses a bat and a ball and is played by two teams of 11 players each, with the aim of scoring the highest number of runs. Cricket is played on an oval-shaped field with a central area called the pitch.

During the match, one team bats and scores runs by running between two wickets, while the other team bowls the ball and attempts to dismiss the batters by hitting the wickets or using other legal methods.

Each team takes turns batting and bowling in one or more innings, and the team with the highest score wins the match.

History of Cricket

The history of cricket is believed to have originated in the 13th century in England, although the founder remains unknown.

Initially, this game was played by children in villages by throwing the ball to the tree trunk or a simple gate, which then evolved the wicket.

Written evidence about cricket appeared in the late 16th century, and the term “cricket” became widely recognized at the beginning of the 1600s.

Entering the 17th to 18th centuries, cricket was increasingly popular, even attracting the attention of nobles, and began to be officially played in various regions in England.

The rules of cricket continue to evolve, including field size, the ball, and the shape of a bat that initially resembled a curved stick to the straight bat of today.

Cricket’s popularity kept rising during the 19th century, largely due to influential figures like W. G. Grace, who helped establish cricket as a globally recognized sport across social classes.

Rules of Cricket

In cricket, there are several rules that must be followed to ensure the match is played fairly and according to the rules.

1. Teams

Cricket is played by two teams, each consisting of 11 players. In each match, one team bats, while the other bowls and fields.

Both teams alternate roles after each innings, so both teams have an equal opportunity to bat and bowl.

2. Scoring

Cricket scoring is based on runs and overs. A run is scored when the batters successfully run between the two wickets. Meanwhile, an over consists of six legal deliveries bowled by one bowler.

The team with the highest number of runs wins the match.

Cricket matches can vary greatly in duration. For example, a Twenty20 (T20) match allows each team up to 20 overs and usually lasts around three hours. One Day Internationals (ODIs) last one day, while Test matches can last up to five days.

3. Field

Cricket is played on an oval-shaped field with a central area called the pitch. At both ends of the pitch are wickets, which serve as the main targets during play. This area is the center of play during both batting and bowling.

Techniques in Playing Cricket

Cricket is a sport that requires focus, agility, and proper basic techniques. To play well, there are several techniques that you should maste,r including the following:

  • Standing stance: The batter stands facing the bowler with feet shoulder-width apart, the body slightly leaning forward, while the back remains straight. Focus your sight on the ball in the bowler’s hand.
  • How to hold a bat: Hold the bat with both hands. For left-hand players, the right hand is placed at the bottom, and vice versa for those who are right-handed players.
  • Shot timing: Pay attention to the direction of the ball. When the ball approaches, place your dominant foot forward, swing the bat backward as preparation, then hit the ball with a shoulder-high swing as strongly as possible for maximum results.
