What Is Padel? The Fast-Growing Sport Everyone’s Talking About

Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash and is easy for people of all ages to play. The game is played by two teams of two players each, who score points by hitting the ball over the net and making use of wall rebounds during play.

Besides being good for your health, padel can also be a fun and relaxing activity to enjoy with friends or coworkers. Want to learn more about what padel is, its benefits, and how the game is played? Let’s dive into the full article below.

What Is Padel?

Padel is a kind of racket sport played in pairs on a court, either indoors or outdoors, that is surrounded by glass walls.

Although it may look similar to tennis at first glance, a padel racket has a distinct design. It is shaped like a teardrop, features a solid face with many small holes, and has a shorter handle than a tennis racket.

A padel court typically measures 20 × 10 meters and is divided by a net in the middle. The glass walls surrounding the court are used to rebound the ball during play. A padel match usually lasts around 60–90 minutes, and serves are performed using an underhand stroke.

Basic Rules of Padel

To play padel smoothly and enjoy the game, it’s important to understand some of its basic rules. Here are a few key things you need to know:

1. Number of Players in Padel

Padel is typically played by four players in a doubles format, with two players on each team. However, the sport can also be played in a singles format, although the rules are slightly different from the standard game.

In doubles play, you and your partner need to manage your positioning, with one player often closer to the net and the other covering the back of the court. Meanwhile, in singles play, you need to move more actively since you are responsible for covering the entire court yourself.

2. Padel Serving Rules

In padel, serves are performed using an underhand motion. To do this, the ball must first bounce on the court, then be hit below waist level.

When serving, you must stand behind the service line and hit the ball diagonally into your opponent’s service box. Once the ball has bounced once in that area, play can continue immediately.

A serve is considered valid if the ball first lands in the opponent’s service box and then hits the wall. If the ball fails to land in the correct area, bounces twice before being returned, or is served in the wrong direction, the point is awarded to the opposing team.

3. Scoring Rules in Padel

In terms of scoring, padel is quite similar to tennis, using a system of 0, 15, 30, 40, and game point. If the score reaches 40–40, the game continues until one team gains a two-point advantage.

Padel matches are usually played in a best-of-three sets format. This means the team that wins two sets first is declared the winner.

A player or team wins a set by reaching six games with a minimum of a two-game lead. However, if the set reaches a 6–6 tie, a tie-break is played. During the tie-break, points are counted as 1, 2, 3, and so on. The first team to reach 7 points with at least a two-point advantage wins the set.

4. Padel Court and Equipment

Padel is played on a rectangular court measuring around 20 × 10 meters. The court is surrounded by glass walls and wire mesh fencing, which can be used to rebound the ball during play.

In terms of equipment, players use a special padel racket that is smaller than a tennis racket, has no strings, and features small holes on its surface. The ball used is also similar to a tennis ball, making it easy for beginners to get used to.

How to Play Padel

Before the game begins, players usually toss a coin or conduct a draw to decide which team will serve first and choose which side of the court they will play on.

To serve, a player hits the ball diagonally into the opponent’s service box. Once the ball bounces once in that area, the opponent can return it, and the rally begins.

If the ball bounces twice or does not land in the opponent’s service area, the point is awarded to the opposing team. However, in padel, the ball is allowed to hit the walls after bouncing on the ground, making the game more dynamic and engaging.

In some cases during a serve, the ball may touch the net. If it still lands in the correct service box afterward, the serve is retaken. However, if the ball does not reach the intended area, the serve is considered invalid.

Tips for Playing Padel

Padel may look easy and beginner-friendly, but it still requires a good level of fitness, as the movements are quite fast and dynamic.

If you have injuries to your wrist, elbow, shoulder, or knee, or any underlying health conditions, it’s best to consult a doctor first to avoid making your condition worse.

To ensure the game stays safe and comfortable, here are some important things you should pay attention to:

  • Warm-up and cool-down: Do these before and after playing to prepare your muscles and reduce the risk of injury.
  • Sportswear: Wear comfortable clothing that absorbs sweat well.
  • Skin protection: Use sunscreen when playing outdoors to protect your skin from sun exposure.
  • Proper footwear: Choose the right shoes to ensure stable and safe movement.
  • Stay hydrated: Make sure to bring and drink mineral water regularly, such as a practical 600 ml AQUA bottle, to keep your body hydrated during the game.
