Guide to Volleyball Net Heights for Different Categories

Volleyball is a sport played by two teams, each consisting of six players. It is commonly played on various occasions, whether at school or in community competitions.

Volleyball can be played by anyone: men, women, or children. However, the net height differs for each category. To find out the net height for volleyball for each category, explore the following article.

The Volleyball Net Height for Men

Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) is an International organization that sets the standard of volleyball for men’s competition. According to the latest rules, FIVB has determined the official net height for men’s volleyball as follows:

  • The Volleyball Net Height: 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches).
  • The Volleyball Net Width: 9.50 meters (32 feet).

These rules apply to International competitions and most national or regional men’s tournaments.

Persatuan Bola Voli Seluruh Indonesia (PBVSI) also has its own guidelines regarding the volleyball net used in men’s competitions. Here are the details:

  • The Volleyball Net Height: 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches).
  • The Volleyball Net Width: 9 meters (29 feet 6 5/16 inches).

Although it uses the same height standard as FIVB, PBVSI sets a slightly shorter net width than the international standard.

The Volleyball Net Height for Women

FIVB not only sets rules for men’s volleyball but also establishes official net height standards for women’s competitions. According to the latest FIVB regulations, below are the official volleyball net specifications for women’s competitions.

  • The Volleyball Net Height: 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches)
  • The Volleyball Net Width: 9.50 meters (32 feet)

The net height for women’s competitions is lower than men’s competitions. This standard is designed to accommodate the average physical differences between male and female players, resulting in a more balanced game.

Additionally, PBVSI also sets the standard volleyball net size for women’s competitions. According to PBVSI, the net dimensions for women’s volleyball are as follows:

  • The Volleyball Net Height: 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches)
  • The Volleyball Net Width:9 meters (29 feet 6 5/16 inches)

Similar to men’s competitions, PBVSI also applies a shorter net width compared to the International rules. This adjustment is made to suit local playing conditions and court characteristics in Indonesia. These adjustments are still aligned with international competition standards.

The Volleyball Net Height for Junior

In volleyball for junior or younger players, the net height depends on the age, gender, height, and skill level of the players of the team.

The standard net height for boys and girls aged 13–14 is 2.24 meters. Meanwhile, for children aged 11–12 years, the net height is set at 2.13 meters.

For boys aged under 10 years old, the net height is also set at 2.13 meters. Meanwhile, for girls aged under 10 years old, the net height is 1.98 meters.

Functions of the Volleyball Net

In addition to understanding basic techniques of volleyball, it is important to know several components of the game, including the net. In volleyball, the net has some functions during the game, including:

  • Divides the Court: The net acts as a boundary that separates the two teams’ playing area. Any ball that fails to cross the net properly can result in a point for the opposing team.
  • Target for Play: The net can serve as a reference point for hitting the ball. Any ball that crosses over the net into the opponent’s area is considered a point for the player who sends the ball.
  • Increases Game Difficulty: A properly set net according to the height adds to the challenge of the game. The player should jump higher to hit the ball over the net.

That concludes the explanation of the volleyball net height and its functions. It is important to follow the latest rule from the authorized organization. By following the rules, the game can occur fairly and competitively.

In addition to mastering the technique and rules of volleyball, proper hydration is also essential during the game. Volleyball requires full energy to maintain fluid balance that supports overall performance.
